Financial protection if a serious illness strikes

Critical illness and serious illness cover are long-term insurance policies that pay a tax-free lump sum directly to you if you’re diagnosed with a qualifying condition. Unlike life insurance which pays when you die these policies pay out while you’re still alive, giving you cash in hand at exactly the moment you need it most.

For serving military personnel, the consequences of serious illness can be even more acute. A cancer diagnosis, heart attack, or stroke can mean extended periods off duty, potential medical discharge, and significant upheaval to family life. A lump sum gives you financial breathing space to focus on recovery rather than money.

Tax Free Lump Sum

Paid directly to you, tax-free. Spend it however you need mortgage, treatment, adaptations, income replacement.

Cover Your Mortgage

Clear or reduce your mortgage at the point you’re least able to keep up repayments.

Protect Your Family

Replace lost income and keep your family financially stable during treatment and recovery.

Covers You Everywhere

At home, on a UK posting or deployed abroad your cover travels with you, 24 hours a day.

Why serious illness cover matters: what the data shows

Serious illness isn’t a rare event. The scale of the problem in the UK is well-documented by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), the UK’s leading independent economics research institute. These figures make the case for cover more powerfully than any sales pitch.

IFS
INSTITUTE FOR FISCAL STUDIES
Independent research UK’s leading economics institute

All figures below are drawn from published IFS research. Sources cited and linked.

1 in 5

Working-age adults in the UK are disabled

Around 8 million working-age people report a longstanding illness, disability or impairment of more than 12 months that limits their daily activities roughly 20% of the entire working-age population.

83%

Of incapacity claimants are out of work for over 2 years

Only 5% of people receiving incapacity benefits are in work. The overwhelming majority face extended periods entirely without earned income far beyond what employer sick pay or SSP covers.

2 in 3

Health-related benefit claimants have claimed for 5+ years

Nearly two-thirds of those claiming health-related benefits have been doing so for five years or more underlining that serious illness is typically a long-term financial event, not a short-term setback.
These figures reveal a fundamental truth about serious illness in the UK: when it happens, it tends to happen for a very long time. Statutory Sick Pay runs for just 28 weeks. Most employer sick pay schemes last 36 months at full pay. After that, most working people face a severe financial cliff edge while the IFS data shows the average serious illness keeps people out of work for years, not months. A lump sum payout at the point of diagnosis can bridge that gap before it becomes a crisis.

£570

Average monthly financial shortfall after a cancer diagnosis

People diagnosed with cancer are on average £570 worse off every month primarily through increased costs and lost income. A critical or serious illness lump sum directly addresses this shortfall at the moment it’s most needed. Source: Macmillan Cancer Support research.

For serving military personnel specifically, these risks are compounded. A medical discharge following a serious illness means losing not just income but also service accommodation, in some cases, and the MOD’s AFCS will not cover conditions unrelated to your service duties. The financial exposure is significant and personal illness cover is the only product designed to address it directly.

Critical illness vs serious illness: what’s the difference?

There are two distinct types of policy available through Absolute Military’s specialist panel. The difference matters one may suit your circumstances significantly better. Our advisers will help you choose, but here’s a plain-English overview:

Serious Illness Cover

Pays out based on the impact the condition has on your life not just a yes/no diagnosis. Can pay multiple times at varying percentages.

  • 182+ conditions covered (vs industry avg ~75)
  • Pays 5% 100% based on severity of impact
  • Multiple payouts possible policy continues
  • Pays at earlier stage, not just life-threatening
  • Available via Vitality on our panel
Critical Illness Cover

Pays a single lump sum on diagnosis of a listed condition at qualifying severity. Policy ends after the payout.

  • ~75 conditions (industry standard)
  • Single 100% payout on qualifying diagnosis
  • Policy ends after claim
  • May not cover early-stage conditions
  • Via Aviva, L&G and Guardian on our panel

Given the IFS data showing that serious illness typically lasts years rather than months, serious illness cover which can pay out multiple times over the life of the policy offers a more comprehensive financial buffer than a policy that pays once and disappears.

What conditions are covered?

Vitality’s serious illness cover, available through Absolute Military’s panel, covers over 182 conditions more than double the industry average of approximately 75 for standard critical illness policies (Defaqto, 2021). Key conditions include:

  • All heart attacks

  • All strokes

  • More cancers than any UK provider

  • Multiple sclerosis

  • Dementia & Alzheimer’s

  • Kidney failure

  • Liver disease

  • Coronary artery bypass

  • Major organ transplant

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Motor neurone disease

  • Total and permanent disability

  • Loss of limbs or sight

Pre-existing conditions and exclusions

Pre-existing conditions may be excluded from cover. For military personnel, trauma or illness directly attributable to service may also be subject to specific terms. All exclusions, loadings and qualifying periods will be explained in full by your Absolute Military adviser before you commit  there are no surprises.

Who should consider serious illness cover?

The IFS data makes clear that serious illness affects a substantial proportion of the working-age population. For serving military personnel, the following circumstances make personal cover particularly important:

You have dependants

A partner, children or other family members who rely on your income would face severe financial pressure if a serious diagnosis took you out of work for years as the IFS data shows is typical.

You have a mortgage

A lump sum can clear or reduce your mortgage at the exact moment you’re least able to keep up repayments  removing the biggest fixed financial obligation.

You’re the main earner

Single-income households face the starkest exposure. With 83% of incapacity claimants out of work for more than two years (IFS), the financial cliff edge is very real.

SSP isn’t enough

Statutory Sick Pay runs for just 28 weeks at £123.25 per week nowhere near enough to cover a mortgage and normal living costs during a condition that typically lasts years

Your AFCS has gaps

The AFCS doesn’t cover illness unrelated to service. Cancer, heart attack, stroke if unconnected to your duties, you are not covered by the MOD. Personal cover fills this gap entirely.

Transitioning to civilian life

Cover taken during service continues after you leave at the same premium, regardless of what civilian role you move into. Waiting means higher premiums and potentially changed health.

How much does military critical illness cover cost?

Premiums vary based on personal factors including age, health, smoking status, military role, the amount of cover required and the policy term. Here are three worked examples based on typical serving personnel profiles:

Real-world pricing examples

CORPORAL, ARMY
Age 28, non-smoker, admin role. £75,000 serious illness cover, 25 years.
~£20-30/mo
FLIGHT LIEUTENANT, RAF
Age 36, non-smoker, flying role. £100,000 serious illness cover, 20 years.
~£35-50/mo
CHIEF PETTY OFFICER, RN

Age 44, non-smoker, seagoing. £75,000 critical illness cover, 15 years.
~£55-75/mo

Indicative premiums only. Actual premiums depend on your age, health, military role, cover amount and policy term. These examples are for illustration purposes and use standard underwriting assumptions. Your adviser will provide a personalised quote.

What affects the price?

Your Age

The younger you are, the lower the premium. Locking in cover early saves money over the long term waiting means higher rates.

Medical Health

Pre-existing conditions may lead to exclusions or loadings. Our advisers will be transparent about this upfront, before you commit.

Your role

Combat roles and hazardous postings are assessed on a case-by-case basis by our specialist military insurers.

Level of Cover

The higher the sum assured, the higher the premium. We’ll help you work out how much cover your family actually needs.

Policy Length

Longer terms cost more. Many people align the term with their mortgage or until their youngest child is financially independent.

Smoking Status

Smokers typically pay approximately twice the premium of non-smokers for the same level of cover.

Does the AFCS cover serious illness?

The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) covers injuries and illnesses that are directly caused or significantly worsened by military service. It is an important safety net but it has a fundamental limitation that is not always well understood.

A cancer diagnosis, heart attack, stroke, or other condition that occurs independently of your service duties is not covered by the AFCS. These conditions represent the overwhelming majority of serious illness claims. For them, a personal policy is the only financial protection available to you.

Holding a personal serious or critical illness policy has no impact on any AFCS entitlement. The two are entirely independent you can hold both without one affecting the other.

Our specialist military insurer panel includes:

We are not tied to any single insurer. We search our panel to find the most appropriate policy for your specific role, health history and circumstances.

More than just a payout

Depending on the policy, a range of support services may be included  either as standard or as optional add-ons that make a real practical difference during diagnosis and recovery:

Nurse Support

Access to specialist nurses for guidance through treatment and recovery.

Counselling & Therapy

Mental health support for you and your family during a difficult period.

Children’s Cover

Optional cover that pays out if your child is diagnosed with a qualifying condition.

Second Medical Opinion

Access to expert second opinions on diagnoses or treatment plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between critical illness cover and serious illness cover?

Critical illness cover pays a single lump sum on diagnosis of a listed condition at qualifying severity and then the policy ends. Serious illness cover pays based on the impact the condition has on your life, ranging from 5% to 100% of your cover amount, and can pay out multiple times. With serious illness cover, if a condition worsens or you later develop a different condition, you can claim again, up to the total cover amount. This is particularly important given IFS data showing most serious illnesses last years, not months.

How likely am I to actually need this cover?

More likely than most people assume. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) reports that approximately one in five working-age adults in the UK, around 8 million people, report having a longstanding illness, disability or impairment of more than 12 months that limits daily activities. The IFS also found that 83% of incapacity benefit claimants are out of work for more than two years, and nearly two-thirds have been claiming for five years or more. Serious illness is a common, long-term event, not a rare edge case.

Will my military role or combat duties affect my application?

Standard high-street insurers may apply significant loadings, exclusions, or outright declines for combat roles and hazardous postings. Absolute Military works exclusively with a specialist panel, Vitality, Aviva, Legal & General and Guardian, who have experience underwriting armed forces personnel and understand the occupational risk involved. Any loadings, exclusions or qualifying conditions will be explained clearly before you take out a policy. Nothing is hidden.

Does the AFCS cover cancer, heart attack or stroke?

Only if those conditions can be directly attributed to your military service. The AFCS covers injuries and illnesses caused or significantly worsened by service duties. A cancer diagnosis, heart attack, stroke, or other condition occurring independently of your service is not covered. These conditions represent the vast majority of serious illness claims in the UK, and for them, a personal policy is the only protection available to you and your family.

Can serious illness cover pay out more than once?

Yes, this is one of the most significant advantages of severity-based serious illness cover over traditional critical illness cover. With Vitality’s serious illness cover, you receive a percentage payout based on the impact of each condition, and the policy continues paying until the total cover amount is exhausted. You could receive a 50% payout on a cancer diagnosis, for example, and a further payment if that cancer progresses or if you later suffer a heart attack. The policy does not end after the first claim.

What happens to my cover when I leave the armed forces?

Your personal serious or critical illness policy is yours, it is not tied to your MOD employment. When you leave service, the policy continues on exactly the same terms, at the same premium, regardless of what civilian job you move into. This is a significant advantage of taking out cover during service. If you wait until after leaving, premiums will be higher due to your age, any health changes, and the loss of military-specific underwriting. Taking cover now locks in lower rates for the long term.
