Financial protection when an accident takes you out of action

Military personal accident insurance pays a cash benefit directly to you if you suffer a qualifying injury from an accident whether you’re on duty, off duty, on leave, deployed overseas, or playing sport. Unlike critical illness cover (which pays on diagnosis of serious disease) or life insurance (which pays when you die), personal accident cover pays for physical injuries that affect your body and your ability to work in the short or long term.

This policy was developed specifically for military personnel. It includes injuries that standard civilian personal accident policies either exclude or simply don’t anticipate, including injuries sustained in conflict, cold injuries like non-freezing cold injury (NFCI), heat stroke, shrapnel and gunshot wounds, and the full range of fractures, dislocations and ligament injuries common in military training and operations.

Being transparent about what’s not included

In the spirit of Consumer Duty and honest advice, here is what the Fairer Finance assessment found is not currently included in this policy. These are tertiary features, niche benefits that exist in some higher-priced market alternatives:

  • Coma benefit – a daily cash payment if you are in a coma following an accident
  • Hostage cover – a daily benefit if you are taken hostage (relevant for some specialist roles)
  • Childcare expenses after injury – to cover childcare costs during recovery
  • Home or vehicle modification costs after permanent disablement

If any of these features are important to you – particularly hostage cover for specialist military roles, speak to an adviser who can discuss whether a different product better fits your specific needs. We would rather you have the right cover than simply buy from us.

Does the AFCS cover personal accidents? Why you need both.

The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) is an important safety net for injuries attributable to service. But it is not the same as personal accident insurance, and understanding the difference is important for your financial protection.

Absolute Military PA
  • Covers accidents on and off duty 24/7, 365 days
  • Covers accidents on leave, during sport, at home
  • Pays cash quickly, no lengthy assessment process
  • Cover amount is clear and fixed at outset
  • Continues after you leave the armed forces
  • No impact on AFCS entitlement
  • Covers conflict injuries explicitly
  • From £3.79/month 96th percentile cheapest (FF 2026)
Armed Forces Compensation Scheme
  • Only covers injuries caused or worsened by service
  • Does not cover off-duty accidents unrelated to service
  • Can involve a lengthy formal claims and assessment process
  • Award amounts determined by MOD tariff tables
  • Ends when you leave service (for future injuries)
  • Not affected by personal insurance you hold separately
  • No cash benefit structure, tariff-based awards
  • Free, but limited in scope

Holding a personal accident policy has no impact on any AFCS entitlement. The two are entirely independent, you can hold both without one affecting the other. Most experienced military financial advisers recommend holding both: the AFCS as a backstop for service-related injuries, and personal accident cover as comprehensive 24/7 protection for everything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this policy cover injuries sustained in conflict?

Yes, and this is one of the most important military-specific features of this policy. The policy explicitly covers injuries caused by conflict with any belligerent, scoring 100% (top of the market) in Fairer Finance’s 2026 independent assessment. Many standard personal accident policies exclude conflict injuries as a matter of course. This policy was designed specifically for serving military personnel, and conflict cover is a core part of what makes it genuinely fit for purpose.

How does the pricing compare to other personal accident policies?

Fairer Finance’s 2026 independent assessment found that Absolute Military’s minimum monthly premium of £3.79 per unit scores in the 96th percentile for lowest price, meaning it is cheaper than 96% of competing products on the market. The maximum individual premium of £18.95 scores in the 81st percentile for lowest price. This exceptional pricing is a result of risk-based pricing and a commitment to challenging the market norms on cost.

What military-specific injuries are covered?

The policy scores 100% in Fairer Finance’s assessment on several military-specific features: conflict injuries, cold injuries (including NFCI and frostbite), heat stroke, skull fractures, facial scarring, ligament tears, tendon ruptures, and dislocations. It also covers gunshot wounds, shrapnel and flesh wounds, and cold injury loss on a permanent basis (scoring 91%, near the top of market). These features reflect the real injury profile of serving military personnel and are not typically found in standard civilian personal accident policies.

Does the AFCS replace the need for personal accident insurance?

No, the AFCS and personal accident insurance serve different purposes and cover different situations. The AFCS only covers injuries caused or significantly worsened by your military service. It does not cover accidents that happen off duty, at home, during sport, on leave, or in civilian settings. Personal accident insurance covers you 24 hours a day, every day, regardless of whether the accident is connected to your service. The two policies are entirely independent, holding both does not affect your AFCS entitlement.

What is not included that some other policies cover?

In the interest of transparency, Fairer Finance’s assessment identified several tertiary features not currently included in this policy: coma benefit (a daily payment if in a coma), hostage cover (a daily benefit if taken hostage, relevant for some specialist military roles), childcare expenses after injury, and home or vehicle modification costs after permanent disablement. These are niche features found in some higher-priced policies. If hostage cover is important to your specific role, please speak to an adviser, we will always recommend the most appropriate product for your circumstances, even if that means recommending an alternative.

How does the unit-based pricing work?

The policy uses a unit structure, starting from £3.79 per unit per month. Each unit provides a set level of benefit for each covered injury. You can purchase multiple units to scale the cover proportionally, for example, a permanent total disablement benefit of £150,000 at one unit scales up with additional units. The maximum individual premium is £18.95 per month. Your adviser will help you work out how many units make sense based on your income, circumstances and what you want to protect.

Who underwrites this policy?

The policy is underwritten by Hamilton Insurance DAC, incorporated in Ireland and regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland. Hamilton Insurance DAC is rated A (Excellent) by AM Best and A- by Fitch Ratings, with both ratings carrying a stable outlook as affirmed in May 2026. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hamilton Insurance Group (NYSE: HG), a global specialty insurer.

“No jargon, no pressure  just honest advice tailored to my situation. I now have total peace of mind.

From start to finish, Kelly made the whole process of sorting out life insurance simple, clear, and completely stress-free. She took the time to really understand my situation and explained all the options in a way that actually made sense. What really stood out was how thorough and patient she was making sure everything was tailored properly rather than just rushing it through. It’s not often you come across someone who genuinely cares about getting the right outcome for you. If you’re thinking about life insurance and don’t know where to start, speak to Kelly you’ll be in very safe hands.”
