Who is our military life insurance for?

Absolute Military’s life insurance is designed specifically for British Armed Forces personnel and the wider military family. We understand the unique circumstances of service life postings, deployments, hazardous roles and we underwrite accordingly, so you’re not penalised for the job you do.

Cover is available to individuals aged 18 + across all of the following groups:

British Army

All ranks, corps and regiments

Royal Air Force

Aircrew, ground crew and support

Royal Navy and Marines

Including submariners

Reservists

All reserve forces

Ex Military Personnel

Transition to civilian life

MOD Civil Servants

And the wider military family

Why take out military life insurance?

Armed forces personnel face significantly higher occupational risk than those in civilian desk-based roles. Whether you’re operating complex or dangerous machinery, working with hazardous materials, or serving in an active conflict zone, the risks you accept are real and your family’s financial security should reflect that.

The MOD provides some death benefits through the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme, but these have limitations. A separate life insurance policy sits entirely independently and covers you around the clock not just when you’re on duty.

Would your family be able to manage without your income?

Think through what your loved ones would face if you were no longer here. The typical financial pressures are significant:

  • Pay off or maintain the mortgage

  • Maintain their current standard of living

  • Clear outstanding personal debts

  • Cover childcare and education costs

  • Fund a deposit on a new home if needed

  • Replace lost income over the long term

How much does military life insurance cost?

Military life insurance through Absolute Military starts from around £5 per month, though the exact premium depends on a number of personal factors. To give you a realistic sense of what cover might cost, here are three worked examples based on typical serving personnel profiles:

Real-world pricing examples

LANCE CORPORAL, ARMY
Age 25, non-smoker, admin role. £100,000 cover over 25 years.
~£5-12/mo
SERGEANT, RAF
Age 35, non-smoker, technical role. £200,000 cover over 20 years
~£18-25/mo

PETTY OFFICER, ROYAL NAVY

Age 42, non-smoker, seagoing. £150,000 cover over 15 years.
~£28-38/mo

Indicative premiums only, based on good health and standard underwriting. Your actual premium will depend on your age, health history, role, cover amount, and policy term. These examples use tailored military underwriting and are for illustration purposes.

What affects the price?

Your Age

Younger applicants typically pay less. The earlier you take out cover, the lower the premium you lock in.

Health History

Pre-existing medical conditions may affect your premium or result in specific exclusions. We’ll explain all of this clearly

Your role

Combat roles, hazardous postings and specialist duties are all factored into our tailored military underwriting.

Level of Cover

The higher the sum assured, the higher the premium. We’ll help you work out how much cover your family actually needs.

Policy Length

Longer terms cost more. Many people align the term with their mortgage or until their youngest child is financially independent.

Smoking Status

Smokers typically pay approximately twice the premium of non-smokers for the same level of cover.

The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) provides automatic financial support if you are injured or killed in service, and it is an important safety net. However, it has limitations that many serving personnel are not fully aware of. A personal life insurance policy fills those gaps directly.

Feature AFCS (MOD) Personal Life Insurance
Covers death on active duty Yes Yes
Covers death off-duty (at home) Yes Yes 24/7
Covers illness-related death Yes Yes
You choose the payout amount Fixed by MOD rules Yes, tailored to you
Continues after leaving service No Yes
Affected by your personal policy Not affected Entirely separate

Importantly, having a personal life insurance policy has no impact on any AFCS award your family may receive. The two are entirely independent you can hold both without one affecting the other.

Deploying within the next 6 months?

Don’t leave it until after you return. We can arrange cover for personnel who are due to deploy. It’s strongly recommended to have life insurance in place before you leave speak to one of our advisers today.

Can I cover my partner too?

Yes. When taking out military life insurance, you can choose to include your partner on the same policy. The premium will be adjusted to reflect the additional risk of covering two lives.

However, in many cases we recommend considering two separate individual policies rather than a single joint policy. Here’s why:

  • Two individual policies can each pay out independently, meaning your family receives two separate lump sums rather than one

  • If one partner dies, the surviving partner retains their own policy in force, without needing to arrange new cover at potentially much higher premiums

  • Individual policies can be tailored differently for example, if one partner has a higher mortgage exposure or earns more

Our advisers will talk you through both options and help you choose the structure that offers your family the best protection.

Factors that shape how much cover you need

Working out the right level of cover is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. As a starting point, consider the following:

  • Your outstanding mortgage balance this is typically the largest single financial exposure for most families

  • Any other debts (personal loans, car finance, credit cards)

  • Whether you have dependents, how many, and their ages a young child may need income support for 20+ years

  • Your annual income and how many years of earnings your family would need replaced

  • Any existing savings or investments that could cover short-term needs

Getting this right requires proper financial advice, not guesswork. Our experienced advisers understand service pay scales, allowances and the MOD benefits structure so they can give you meaningful, tailored guidance rather than a generic calculator result..

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get life insurance if my role involves combat or hazardous duties?

Yes. Standard high-street life insurance policies often exclude or apply significant loadings to combat or hazardous roles. At Absolute Military, we work with insurers who offer tailored underwriting specifically for military personnel, meaning your role and deployment profile are taken into account at the outset, with clear terms rather than hidden exclusions. Any loadings, exclusions or qualifying periods will be explained to you before you commit to a policy.

Can I get covered if I'm deploying within 12 months?

Yes, in most cases. It is strongly recommended that you arrange life insurance before a deployment rather than waiting until you return. Our advisers can discuss your specific deployment circumstances and work to get cover in place quickly. Call us on 01233 885410 for more detail.

Does having my own life insurance policy affect my AFCS entitlement?

No. The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) and any personal life insurance policy you hold are entirely independent of one another. A personal policy will not reduce, offset, or otherwise affect any AFCS award made to you or your family. Equally, receiving an AFCS payment has no bearing on your personal life insurance policy’s payout.

What happens to my cover when I leave the armed forces?

A personal life insurance policy you take out through Absolute Military is yours, it is not tied to your employment with the MOD. When you leave service, your policy continues in exactly the same way, at the same premium, regardless of what civilian job you move into. This is one of the significant advantages of taking out personal cover during your service rather than relying solely on MOD benefits that end when you leave.

How quickly can I get covered?

In most cases, cover can be arranged within 24 hours of completing your application. You can get an indicative quote in under 5 minutes. Some cases may require additional medical underwriting, which could extend the timeline slightly our advisers will keep you informed at every step.
