Protection Built for Warminster Garrison Personnel

Warminster is a historic market town in south-west Wiltshire, on the western edge of Salisbury Plain.

The town has a population of over 23,000, including the residents of Warminster Garrison, a military garrison of the British Army.

For the thousands of service personnel and families posted here, that military presence shapes everything, including the kind of financial protection you need.

Standard civilian insurance products are not built for the realities of garrison life. They do not account for kit held on personal charge, Licence to Occupy obligations in service accommodation, or the specific gaps that sit alongside your Armed Forces pension entitlements. This page sets out what is available, what your scheme already covers, and where the gaps are that you need to fill yourself.

Absolute Military is FCA authorised (796907), a trading style of Just Advice Solutions Ltd, and works exclusively with serving and former military personnel. Everything on this page is relevant to troops based at Battlesbury Barracks, Waterloo Lines and Harman Lines.

Who Is Based at Warminster Garrison?

Warminster Garrison comprises three primary barracks sites: Waterloo Lines, Battlesbury Barracks, and Harman Lines, each contributing to the overall infrastructure supporting military personnel and operations on the edge of Salisbury Plain.

Units currently based at Warminster include 1 Medical Regiment at Assaye Barracks and 2nd Battalion The Royal Yorkshire Regiment, who have relocated from Chester to Warminster.

A 226-tonne steel superstructure at Warminster Garrison supports the British Army’s Armoured Cavalry Programme, known as Ajax, as part of a £17 million infrastructure project with a synthetic training facility to support Ajax Regiments based within Salisbury Plain.

Waterloo Lines serves as the headquarters for the Land Warfare Centre, a central hub for training soldiers and officers throughout their careers and preparing them for operational readiness.

Whether you are attached to the Land Warfare Centre, serving with a combat arm regiment at Battlesbury, or part of an engineering detachment at Harman Lines, your protection needs are broadly the same and largely unmet by the standard civilian market.

What Your AFPS15 Death in Service Cover Actually Provides

Most personnel at Warminster will be enrolled in the Armed Forces Pension Scheme 2015. It is important to understand exactly what it provides on death, because this determines how large a gap remains for your family.

If you die in service, your spouse, civil partner or eligible partner will receive an immediate pension paid for life, and a tax-free lump sum amounting to four times your final pensionable earnings.

This is payable regardless of length of service, as the usual two-year qualifying period is waived for death in service.

Four times gross pay is a meaningful sum, but it is not a complete financial plan. Consider what is not covered. There is no critical illness or serious illness provision within AFPS15.

Critical illness cover is not provided to serving personnel and must be arranged personally.

If you are diagnosed with cancer, suffer a heart attack or a stroke whilst serving at Warminster, AFPS15 pays nothing in response to that diagnosis. You continue serving or you are medically discharged, but there is no lump sum protection for the period of treatment and recovery.

There is also no income protection available through standard civilian channels for serving personnel. Serving military are not eligible for civilian income protection products. This makes serious illness cover all the more important, because a lump sum on diagnosis can substitute for income protection during recovery.

Serious Illness Cover for Warminster Troops

Absolute Military offers VitalityLife Serious Illness Cover (SIC) in three levels: 1X, 2X and 3X. This is not the same as standard critical illness cover, and the difference matters for serving personnel.

Unlike traditional critical illness plans, Vitality Serious Illness Cover pays out based on the impact the condition has on your lifestyle. Conditions are classed by severity level and pay out between 5% and 100% of your total cover amount, depending on severity.

On average, critical illness insurance policies only cover 75 conditions. Vitality Serious Illness Cover covers 174, including all heart attacks, all strokes, more cancers than any other insurer, all neurological diseases, breathing and respiratory diseases, kidney diseases, and permanent disability.

In 2025, 1 in 7 Vitality Serious Illness Cover claims would not have been covered by a typical enhanced critical illness plan.

For troops whose physical exposures during training and operations on Salisbury Plain are significant, that breadth of cover matters.

The three levels work as follows:

  • SIC 1X:

Covers 114 conditions, including 15 illnesses unique to Vitality. Pays out 25% to 100% of your cover amount, with 62 conditions eligible for the full 100% payout.

  • SIC 2X:

Covers 143 conditions, including 35 conditions unique to Vitality. Pays out 15% to 100% of your cover amount. Claims can be made up to two times your full cover amount.

  • SIC 3X:

Vitality’s best-in-class cover as rated by Defaqto. It covers the most conditions at even earlier stages and lets you claim up to three times your cover amount. It also covers every condition in the market, including 60 unique conditions not covered anywhere else.

Life Cover for Warminster Service Personnel

Your AFPS15 death in service lump sum is four times gross pay. Depending on your rank, your mortgage balance, your family’s outgoings and how many years remain on your mortgage, that may or may not be sufficient. Many troops at Warminster find that the four-times lump sum would clear the mortgage but leave little else for dependants to live on.

VitalityLife Life Cover can sit alongside your AFPS15 entitlement to bridge that gap. A level term policy can be placed in trust, which means it falls outside your estate and pays to your beneficiaries without delay. Premiums are fixed for the term, which means you know exactly what you are paying each month regardless of any change in your health or role.

The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme and pension benefits are valuable but may not be enough to cover a mortgage and all family costs. Full disclosure of your role, duties, and planned deployments is essential to ensure your policy is valid and pays out when needed.

Absolute Military advisers understand military roles and deployments and will guide you through that disclosure process correctly.

Kit Insurance for Warminster Garrison Personnel

Every soldier, sailor, marine and aviator at Warminster holds kit on personal charge. If that kit is lost, damaged or stolen, you can be held personally liable for the cost of replacement. Standard home insurance does not cover military-issued equipment, and it does not extend to deployments on Salisbury Plain training areas or overseas exercises.

Absolute Military’s Kit Insurance is ranked number one for comprehensiveness by Fairer Finance 2026. It covers your military kit, personal possessions, gadgets and service accommodation both at home, on a posting, or deployed anywhere in the world.

The policy covers military kit (issued and purchased), personal possessions and gadgets, home contents, accidental damage to service accommodation under your Licence to Occupy (up to £20,000 as standard), and personal liability up to £5,000,000.

This is particularly relevant at Warminster, where personnel in both single living accommodation and married quarters at Battlesbury and Waterloo Lines hold a Licence to Occupy.

Licence to Occupy cover of £20,000 is included as standard for all serving personnel in SLA or MQs.

Kit insurance starts from £7 per month.

Personal Accident Cover

Personal accident cover pays out cash benefits if you suffer a fracture, hospitalisation or loss of a limb as a result of an accident. For troops training on Salisbury Plain, where field exercises and live-fire ranges are part of the daily working week, the risk of accidental injury is a practical one.

Absolute Military’s Personal Accident Cover starts from £3.79 per month for a comprehensive policy.

Our cover is specifically developed for serving military personnel including the British Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force, and protects you financially against fractures, hospitalisation and rehabilitation.

Optional family cover can be added for an additional monthly premium, which means spouses and children can also be protected under the same policy.

The Vitality Programme: Rewards for Staying Active

Serving personnel are already required to maintain fitness standards. The Vitality Programme rewards that effort. As a VitalityLife policyholder you earn points for physical activity tracked through wearables and partner gym visits. Those points translate to discounts on cinema tickets, fitness equipment, hotel stays and more.

The rewards programme is not a gimmick. For troops who are already running, tabbing and in the gym as part of their duty, the Vitality Programme simply converts that existing activity into tangible financial benefits. Speak to our Vitality Coach to see how the rewards programme works in practice before you take out a policy.

Mortgages for Warminster Service Personnel

Service personnel posted to Warminster face the same challenge as troops across every UK garrison: whether to buy locally, stay in service accommodation, or buy elsewhere and let. Our mortgage specialist John Greasby works with serving personnel across all scenarios, including Forces Help to Buy, joint-service purchases and buy-to-let for those in SLA.

If you are considering buying in Warminster, Westbury or the wider BA12 postcode, or if you want to review a mortgage you already hold, contact us for an introduction to John.

Current Market Conditions

Protection premiums and mortgage rates move regularly. For the latest position on what cover costs and how the market is moving, read our October 2026 Market Review. It is updated every month and covers life cover pricing, serious illness trends and mortgage rate movements relevant to serving personnel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my AFPS15 death in service cover replace the need for life insurance?

Under AFPS15, if you die in service your spouse or civil partner receives a tax-free lump sum of four times your final pensionable earnings, plus an immediate pension paid for life.

Whether that is enough depends on your mortgage balance, the age of your children and your family’s monthly outgoings. Many Warminster personnel find that the four-times lump sum covers the mortgage but leaves a gap in long-term family income. A VitalityLife policy can bridge that gap at a fixed monthly cost.

Can I get serious illness cover while I am serving at Warminster?

Yes. Serious illness cover is available to serving military personnel.

Many providers offer cover to serving personnel, including those posted abroad, and specialist advisers work with insurers who understand military life and can offer appropriate protection even if you are deployed or working in higher-risk roles.

Absolute Military arranges VitalityLife Serious Illness Cover for troops currently serving across all three Warminster barracks sites.

What happens to my kit insurance if I deploy from Warminster on exercise or operations?

Absolute Military Kit Insurance covers your military kit, personal possessions, gadgets and service accommodation both at home, on a posting, or deployed anywhere in the world.

The policy does not pause when you leave the garrison.

It protects military-issued equipment, personally purchased kit, contents and personal belongings against loss, theft and accidental damage

wherever you are operating.

I am in married quarters at Battlesbury Barracks. Do I need Licence to Occupy cover?

Yes. If you live in service-provided accommodation, whether single living accommodation or married quarters, you are responsible for accidental damage to the building, fixtures and fittings. The MOD can bill you personally for that damage when you leave the property.

Absolute Military Kit Insurance includes £20,000 of Licence to Occupy cover as standard for all serving personnel in SLA or MQs.

That cover is included in the base policy price with no additional premium.

Can I get income protection as a serving member of the British Army at Warminster?

No. Serving military personnel are not eligible for civilian income protection products. This is a genuine and significant gap in the protection landscape for troops at Warminster. The most effective substitute is VitalityLife Serious Illness Cover, which pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a serious condition. That lump sum can be used to cover living costs, mortgage payments or home adaptations during a period when you are unable to serve. Speak to our Vitality Coach to explore the options that are available to you.
